How to Have a Smooth & Stress-Free Newborn Session

Because these tiny moments are fleeting, and you deserve to enjoy every second.

What Should We Wear?

Family grouped together with Mom holding her newborn and older brother with hand on baby, Dad holding them all.

Keep it simple, soft, and neutral.

Our parent/sibling portraits are done against simple backdrops—think white, gray, or tan.

Outfits in solid colors or simple patterns and textures look timeless and let baby shine.

So think creams, soft colors, warm taupes, or even a classic grey.

And don’t stress, I’m happy to help coordinate!

How Long Will It Take?

Newborns run the show, and we’re on baby time now!

  • Luxe Sessions: 2 to 4+ hours (yes, really—it’s baby-led and low-stress).

  • Petite Sessions: About 1.5 hours (baby stays wrapped and cozy throughout).

Some littles snooze the entire time, some are wide-eyed explorers—we simply go with their flow. Please keep the rest of your day wide open—this is not the day to squeeze in appointments or errands. We’re in no rush and will move at your baby’s pace with all the patience in the world.

Helpful Tips for a Happy Baby

  • Dress baby in a zip-up sleeper—easy off, easy on, no over-the-head drama.

  • Please skip the onesie—it usually needs to be removed, and that can wake them up.

  • Feed baby just before you leave home, and make sure they get a good burp before hopping in the car (trust me—tiny tummies can be tricky!).

  • Coming from a distance? No worries. You’re more than welcome to feed baby when you arrive. We’re not about rushing.

P.S. If you're nursing, try to keep your diet baby-friendly for the 72 hours before your session. Some sensitive littles can react to certain foods, which can make them a bit fussy or gassy during our time together.

What’s the Studio Vibe?

Think cozy, calm, and baby-bliss-ready. The newborn room is kept toasty warm (around 80°), just how babies like it. If that sounds like a heatwave to you, feel free to dress light or step out into the comfy parent area—we even have a viewing window so you can peek in on all the sweet poses happening without breaking a sweat.

Sessions can feel long, but they’re also a rare chance for you to relax. I’m a professional baby snuggler after all—so sit back, sip something warm, and soak in this special pause in time.

What to Expect at Your Session

Although I cannot speak for all photography studios, I welcome all to my cozy little studio in the heart of downtown Minden, Nebraska! When you arrive, everything will be ready to go—soft lighting, warm space, and all the magic waiting to happen.

If you’re booked in for a Luxe Session, we’ll start with those sweet family and sibling photos first while everyone is fresh and smiley.

I’ve even got a small play area to help keep big siblings entertained. Once we’ve captured those giggles and cuddles, your partner/helper is welcome to take the kiddos for a snack, a park visit, or even head home —whatever works best! After that, it’s all about your sweet little one.

Quick note with love: Studios should always be safe and serene during the baby’s solo photo time—props are for posing, not climbing. If you have other littles with you, it’s always good to have a conversation with the photographer about what is okay to play with and what isn’t.
